Moving Forward and Standing Still?
I know. If you read the title, you are probably confused. Which is as it should be! Common sense (a much-needed commodity in our world today) would suggest that one cannot move forward while at the same time standing still. I read an anonymous quote this week that said, “Most people are in favor of progress. It’s just the changes they don’t like.”
Progress seems to be that ambiguous “thing” that comes in the form of vision statements, challenges for change, resolutions to do better, and the like. However, to truly achieve any level of progress, it is imperative that the accompanying change be undertaken. Think about it this way. If progress is defined as changing one’s wardrobe, how silly would it be to wear the same outfit for 10 years in a row? You will only update your wardrobe by actually changing the clothing you wear. You can talk about progress, and about change, and about making strides for the future, but until you actually get rid of that baby blue leisure suit, no real progress will happen.
Christians can sometimes be guilty of the same thing. Often we are challenged by a message or lesson, or we feel the leading of the Holy Spirit, and we toss around phrases and words that indicate our desire for progress in our spiritual journies. Until we actually make application of truth as it has been revealed to us, we will never be able to experience any measureable progress. Embrace the changes that God has for you, and see exactly how far He will take you!
